Downloading Software

On each product page there is a link that allows you to download software. When you click this link, a pop-up window appears notifying you that you have initiated a file download. This pop-up window will be titled 'Save As...', within which you can select where you would like the file to be saved. (To keep your directory structure manageable, we recommend you create a separate folder where you keep all of your downloads.). Click the 'Save' button to complete the download process.

Unpacking Software

The file you just saved will often be in a compressed format (this makes the file smaller and easier to download). Before you can install it on your PDA it will need to be decompressed. Check the filename of the program you just downloaded. If it ends with ".ZIP" you will need to complete this step. If the filename ends with ".TXT"or ".EXE" you can skip this step.

Depending on the filename extension and the type of computer you are using, the unpacking process will be different. .ZIP files - A Zip archive contains multiple files within it. The archive must first be expanded with an unzip utility. For Windows, suitable choices include WinZip, winrar, ZipMagic, and 123Zip.

Files ending in '.TXT' are plain text files. Files ending in '.EXE' are executable files which typically operate in a Windows or DOS environment.

HotSync - for PalmPilots only

Once you have decompressed the program, you need to schedule it for HotSync in order to transfer it to your Palm. The easiest way to accomplish this is with an installation utility. An installation utility comes with the Palm desktop software. The included tool and instructions for various platforms are given below:

  1. 'Install Tool' if using Palm Desktop 3.x for Windows:
  2. •  Start the tool

    •  Click on the 'Add...' button

    •  Select the file to install

  3. 'PalmPilot Install Tool' if using Palm Desktop 2.x for Windows:
  4. •  Start the tool

    •  Click on the 'Browse...' button

    •  Select the file to install

  5. 'HotSync Manager' if using Palm Desktop 2.1 for Macintosh:
  6. •  Start the tool

    •  Go to the 'HotSync' menu and select 'Install...'

    •  Click the 'Add to List' button in the 'Install Handheld Files' window which appears

    •  Select the file to install.

  7. 'Install App' if using Pilot Desktop 1.x for Macintosh:
  8. •  Start the tool

    •  Click on the 'Select...' button

    •  Select the file to install

(Note that Pilot Desktop 1.x is no longer supported by 3Com.)

Installation utilities are quite simple to use and will allow you to select the '.PDB' and '.PRC' files you wish to transfer to your Palm the next time you HotSync. Next time you put your Palm in its cradle and select 'HotSync', your application will automatically be installed. Once you have done this, check your application launcher to confirm that the program has been added.

Other problems:

Software not working correctly on handheld

Check to see if your software requires a registration code/activation key to function properly. Registration keys may be provided by Explorepda at the time of purchase or may come directly from the software developer. Please read your invoice page and purchase notification email to verify the need for a code from the software developer.

Always check the System Requirements and Compatible Devices sections at the bottom of every software's information page to see if your device is compatible. This information is supplied by each software developer. We usually specify the lowest possible OS for compatibility, so if OS 3.0 is listed, this means that any Palm handheld running OS 3.0 or higher is compatible.

If you're having trouble synchronizing the data for a specific application, check to see if the software came with a desktop application.

For issues directly related to product functionality, errors or device compatibility, please contact the software developer directly. The developer's product support address may be listed on your notification email, or can be found on the product's information page at Explorepda.com

Often, the software comes with product-specific installation instructions written by the developer. If you're having trouble, check the .ZIP file you downloaded from us for any type of Read Me file or other instructions (usually Text, HTML or PDF file).
